Laenland
Lit. 'loanland'. The most important characteristic of laenland was that it was not hereditary; rather, it was granted for a fixed time, usually the life of the grantee and that of his widow and heir. At the end of the term it reverted to the granter. Laenland implied service to the granter for the fixed term; in this, and in not being hereditary it resembles the *benefice. -
